Cold Weather Recess
Submitted by Mrs. Baker on Thu, 12/11/2008 - 14:57
It is difficult to set guidelines that fit every circumstance and condition with regards to outside activities during cold weather. Principals are advised to use their discretion and good judgment as to whether or not students will go outside, as well as the duration of the outside activity. Principals may opt for a shorter recess period in cold temperatures or specify a temperature of above 20 degrees as the cut off point for going out.
Elementary students should not go outdoors for recess or physical education whenever the temperature falls below 20 degrees, including the wind chill factor.
Each year students and parents should be informed of the school’s cold weather guidelines, along with reminders about the necessity of wearing appropriate clothing for cold weather activities. Schools should honor reasonable parent requests that a student be allowed to stay indoors. Requests based on health reasons must be honored.
Thurmont Elementary Guidelines:
If it is between 20-32 degrees each team will make the decisions regarding outdoor recess.
