Math Tutoring Opportunity: I am happy to announce that we were recently provided with some Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) funding. This funding will allow students the opportunity to participate in after school math tutoring. Invitations to participate in our ELO were sent home today. If your child will be participating, please be sure and return the permission slip/transportation form no later than Tuesday, November 25th. Our ELO will begin the week of December 1st.

Family Game Night: This is a reminder that TES will be hosting a Family Game Night on Monday, November 24 from 7:00-8:00 in the cafeteria. You and your child will have a chance to play both Math & LA games and activities. Please plan on coming…we would love to see you there!

Home School Folders and Agendas: All students in our school were supplied with an agenda that is carried to and from school on a daily basis. This agenda serves as a communication tool between you and the school. Important information and assignments are usually written or placed in there for you and your child to refer to. It is important for parents to check this agenda each and every night. We thank you for your effort to continue to check agendas and communicate with the school.

Dismissal Routines: We need your help in order to keep our student’s safe during dismissal. It has come to my attention that a few parents (who appear to be in a hurry) are not following our dismissal routines. Therefore, I am requesting that if your child is a car rider that you please wait in line patiently, and not “cut-off” or double park your car. These routines have been put in place for the safety of our students. Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Before and After School Child Care: Beginning Jan. 5, 2009, the YMCA will be offering Before and After School Day Care here at TES. If you are interested in childcare, or would like more information about this program, please contact the YMCA at 301-663-5131 ext. 276.

Toys/Cell Phones: Toys/ Cell Phones can disrupt the general classroom learning environment and create many difficulties for children, teachers and the administrators. For that reason, we ask your support in our attempts to eliminate any “toy/cell phone” problems. Children are not allowed to bring toys to school unless the classroom teacher has granted permission. If any staff member sees a toy/cell phone, he/she will be given a warning to put the toy in their book bag. If the toy is seen again, the adult will take it. A parent will need to come to school to retrieve the toy if the child is to have it returned before the end of the school year. Thank you so very much for your support in this matter.

Attendance Information: The attendance committee monitors student attendance on a monthly basis. At a recent meeting, the attendance team sent home letters to all students who have missed 5 or more days of school this year. We need the support of our parents to ensure that students attend school on time every day that they are well. Congratulations to the students and staff of TES. We had 96.57% attendance for September 2008!! (96% or higher is excellent attendance) We will celebrate this accomplishment, as a school, on Friday, October 31. All students and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite sports team clothing!!

Thanks for attending Parent-Teacher Conferences: Thank you to all the parents that were able to join us last week for conferences. What a great way to show our children that we are partners in their education.

Our PTA is awesome: A special thank you to our PTA for providing dinner to our staff during parent teacher conferences. Our staff enjoyed the subs, salad, chips, drinks and desserts that our wonderful PTA provided for us. J

Family Game Night: Thurmont Elementary will be hosting a Family Game Night on Monday, November 24 from 7:00-8:00 in the cafeteria. You and your child will have a chance to play both Math & LA games and activities. Look for additional information in upcoming Principals’ Newsletters.

Volunteers and siblings: Due to liability reasons, parents that are volunteering in our building may not bring young children or siblings with them when they volunteer at school.

Students arriving late: If you are running late or arriving after school starts due to an appointment, please be sure and accompany your child into the school. This will provide a safe environment for your child and allow you to sign him/her in at the office.

Label, Label, Label:  Because of the cold weather, we know that children will be wearing outerwear items such as heavier coats, hats and gloves. Please label these items for easy identification. THANKS!

Everyone needs a friend. Would your child benefit from a friend, a caring adult, who can be a positive influence in their life, and support their educational and emotional growth?   Big Brothers Big Sisters can help. Their organization matches children with volunteer adult role models who share similar interests, and don’t mind being a kid again. These volunteers must participate in several background checks, home visits, additional screening and final approval from you, before they can be matched with your child. Big Brothers Big Sisters has served Frederick County for over 30 years, and studies have shown that children matched with adult role models are less likely to use drugs and alcohol, as well as show an increased interest in school.  Big Brothers Big Sisters program works with children who have an incarcerated parent. If you would like to learn more about the additional programs they have to offer, visit them on the web at www.bbbsfrederick.org or call them at (301)694-0188.
