Need a Good Summer Read?
Submitted by rowen on Wed, 06/03/2009 - 19:59.
Library Media Specialists are encouraging all students to read this summer. Groups of school and public librarians have created suggested book lists for various age groups. Students may visit their favorite public library branch this summer to borrow the books and take part in the FCPL Summer Reading program. Reading the books is voluntary, but the goal is to enhance reading achievement. Voluntary reading promotes reading skills such as word recognition, vocabulary development, conceptual understanding, fluency and comprehension.
The librarians selected a variety of books and genres to reflect personal interests, various reading levels and world knowledge. Beverly Nichols in the Library Media Connection (May/June 2009) states, “Research has repeatedly shown a correlation between the amount of time spent reading and overall reading achievement, including vocabulary and fluency.”
Please ensure that your child has access to high interest and appropriately challenging books this summer. Take them to the public library regularly. The goal is maintain and improve reading skills throughout the summer. Don’t forget to check out some audio books to play in the car on those long road trips. Talk with your child about the books that they read.
Here are the 2009 voluntary lists:
