Guidance Counselor

Hi!  My name is Diane Fike and I am enjoying my 4th year as Guidance Counselor at Urbana Elementary.  It is a priviledge to work in a school where staff, students, and parents work together to build a strong community of learners!

I have been in the field of education for 17 years.  Prior to being a counselor, I taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and several years as a LLSP teacher.  Here at UES, some of my responsibilities include the Character Counts program, Multicultural committee, School Improvement Team member, Student Services Team member, co-coordinator for Parent Volunteers, student mentor, and a teacher mentor to an intern this year from McDaniel College.

I believe that emphasizing a child's abilities and strengths and creating a strong home/school connection enables a child to reach his or her best potential for learning and success.  It is my continuing goal to help each child at Urbana Elementary 'be the best that they can be!'

I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Bridgewater College in Virginia and recently, my Master's degree in Counseling Education from McDaniel College in Westminster.

The primary focus of the school counseling program is to nurture and enhance learning.  I teach classroom lessons at each grade level on various topics to encourage and promote academic, personal/social, and career growth for every child.  I facilitate small groups on such topics as Anxiety, Social Skills, Organization and Study Skills, Changing Families, Self-Esteem, and Controlling Anger to help children with personal needs.  I frequently meet with students on an individual basis when they are experiencing social, emotional, or academic difficulties that may be interfering with their learning.  I want the students to know that they can always turn to me for help and support at any time.

Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.  You can reach me by phone at 240-236-2202 or e-mail at diane.fike@fcps.org.

I was born and raised in Carroll County and moved to Frederick County with my husband thirty years ago.  We are the proud parents of 28-year-old triplet girls and a 21-year-old son.  Besides spending time with family and friends, I also enjoy outdoor activities, baking, singing, and music.  I love to play handbells and the piano.
