THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
In the spring of 1993 the Maryland State Board of Education issued a requirement that all Maryland high school graduates perform 75 hours of Service Learning – or a locally designed program in student service approved by the State Superintendent of Schools – prior to being issued a Maryland high school diploma. That requirement became effective for all ninth grade students for the 1993-94 school year (class of 1997).
LOCALLY DESIGNED & APPROVED PROGRAM
The Maryland State Superintendent approved the Frederick County Public Schools plan for infusing Service Learning into the curriculum. The plan specifies that all Service Learning activities include:
- Preparation by the student for the Service Learning activity.
- Action – either direct, indirect, or advocacy
- Reflection on the action activity
