Screencasting in school:

Increasing Teacher Productivity and Student Learning

Screencasting is a process that allows one to capture actions viewed on a computer screen, such as browsing a website, saving a file to a flash drive or performing a task in Excel or Inspiration.  One can also use a microphone to narrate this process.  This is especially effective because the learner can see what's happening while they hear someone explain it at the same time.  The result is an online presentation that makes it seem like you are watching someone's computer screen over their shoulder!

What do I need to get started? 

• Jing software (approved on FCPS software matrix for all schools) - download at www.jingproject.com
• A headset with a microphone
• Optional: Interactive white board, interactive chalk board and either ActivInspire or Inspiration software
• An Internet connection

Tips for screencasting

• Find a quiet place where you will be comfortable recording your voice
• Use a storyboard to think about what you want to say- map out your recording
• You can save your content locally, or upload it to www.screencast.com if you wish- each type of save serves its purpose (public knowledge vs. private data, etc.)
• When used in conjunction with white board software, you can create powerful visuals for your learners

How does Jing work? 

• Jing needs to be installed by your technology coordinator
• Click Start | Programs | TechSmith | Jing to access the program
