Texting in class? Nope. They're TESTING in class!

Posted in

At first glance it may look like the student on the left is texting on his phone during class, but he's actually texting on task.  Students in Mr. Van Bloem's AP English class at Walkersville High School are using Promethean ActivExpressions to complete a practice test on George Washington.

Class started today with each student receiving their own ActivExpression registered to their name, a copy of a reading about George Washington, and a paper version of a multiple choice test.  After reading the selection and completing the test on paper, answers are then entered into the ActivExpression.  Mr. Van Bloem's computer collects all the responses, which students submit at their own pace, and a bar graph keeping track of their progress is displayed on the screen.

Once the test is completed the students will receiver their individual scores as well as a chance to review any of the questions for which they entered incorrect answers.  Final scores are also tabulated in an Excel spreadsheet for easy grade collection.

3 Ways to Use ActivSlates for High School Science

Posted in

Walkersville High School Science Department is always looking for new technology to improve instruction and engage students.  Under the direction of WHS Science Teacher and Technology Coordinator Nus Hism, the teachers have been using MacIntosh computer stations, ActivSlates, and a variety of software to enhance the curriculum.

Today we reviewed "3 Ways to Use An ActivSlate in Science"
1.  Use it as a mouse to control your computer from anywhere in the room and "annotate over desktop" at any time
2.  Import .pdf files into flipcharts so you can mark-up and manipulate the same papers you'd normally use with the document camera
3.  Download pre-made flipcharts from www.prometheanplanet.com

Click here to download and check out the ActivInspire flipchart we used!

Or check out one of the flipcharts from Promethean Planet used as examples in the list below.

Description:

Do you already know how to use existing ActivInspire flipcharts, but now you are ready to edit them to better fit your needs?  This sessions is for you!  "ActivInspire: The Next Steps" builds on the skills presented from the fall after-school sessions.  You will learn some basic skills needed to modify an existing flipchart, such as: design mode, grouping and ungrouping objects, layering objects, editing text, and simple color tricks.  Participants will also learn how to modify pre-made templates that can be modified for any content.  The newest features of ActivInspire version 1.6 will be presented, which includes embedding HTML code (such as for YouTube videos or Quizlet games) into your flipcharts.  You will learn how to make the most of your toolbar by modifying profiles and toolbars.  Finally, there will be the opportunity to download flipcharts from Promethean Planet to practice the skills from the workshop.

Note: This session is designed to build on the skills from the fall session. Participants should come to this session with some basic ActivInspire experience: opening flipcharts, using the pen tool and the select tool, turning pages, erasing objects, and adding text.

Objectives: Participants will learn to:

  • Learn how to use Design Mode to edit and create flipcharts

Dynamic Paper: Create your own digital math manipulatives

Dynamic Paper is a new online application from NCTM Illuminations and worth checking out if you teach math.  As quoted on their website,

"Need a pentagonal pyramid that's six inches tall? Or a number line that goes from ‑18 to 32 by 5's? Or a set of pattern blocks where all shapes have one-inch sides? You can create all those things and more with the Dynamic Paper tool. Place the images you want, then export it as a PDF activity sheet for your students or as a JPEG image for use in other applications or on the web."

See picture below. It shows the Dynamic Paper application where you can create all kinds of math manipulatives, save them as a JPG (or PDF) and then insert them into Promethean flipcharts.  Of course, you can also achieve the same result with the ActivInspire camera as well.  However, Dynamic Paper allows you to create PDFs, handouts and flipchart manipulatives that are all the same so it is easier for students to follow along. Create NETS, graph paper, number lines, number grids, tessellations, shapes and spinners.

After you save your manipulatives as a JPG, insert them into ActivInspire! Move them around and manipulate them in math lessons.  (See below)
